Does the Bible actually say that mothers should not work outside of the home?Titus 2:5 says that a woman is to be self-controlled, pure, busy at home, kind and subject to her husband.î The purpose of that behavior is explained as ìso that no one will malign the Word of God.î Does working outside the home malign the Word of God? Is it possible for a woman to honor God while working and raising a family? Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question found in the Bible. The call to live a holy and righteous life before God requires that each person seek with an open heart, where the Lord is leading in this area.
How can a woman, by working out of the home cause dishonor to the Lord? What is the state of the home: chaotic or orderly? What type of nutrition is the family getting: frozen pizza or a healthy dinner? How do the children behave: disrespectful and manipulative or polite and gentle? What is the relationship between the husband and wife: resentful and angry or loving and appreciative? You can clearly see how a woman who is pulled in too many directions cannot give any area of her life the attention it requires. Now, I know that many of you read that last sentence and the hair on the back of your neck stood up because you resent being the one who is responsible for the home and the family. I am sorry, I didnít design it that way, God did. He made man and woman different. That doesnít mean the either is less important, both are vital to a healthy family.
Most mothers and fathers would never say that it is better to place a child in day care than for that child to be at home with mom. But, because of over-spending, poor planning and selfish desires, many parents refuse to consider giving up an income. To you parents: I would recommend that you pray that God will show you His will and then give you what it takes to follow after it.
There are other parents, however, who, because of hard times and crisis, have no choice but to work. My heart goes out toyou. You must feel so torn. Please know that God loves you and wants to help you through this difficult time. You need to seek the help of a pastor or friend who can help you find a Christian counselor or financial counselor to determine if there is any other way for you to get by. There are things you can do from home or part-time. Whatever the case, put it in the Lords hands, He wonít let you down.
